Arizona Cardinals reportedly interested in TE Chris Cooley, who thinks he
That morning, the former Redskins tight end had power cleaned 350 pounds inside the Redskins Park weight room – the most he had done since he was in college. Two seasons in the booth also mostly convinced him that his Redskins legacy wouldn’t be spoiled if he spent time running around in some other color uniform.
He first recently brought up the possibility of a return on his radio show, proclaiming, “I’ll just say that I want to (play again)”.
I actually had the chance to speak to Chris on a number of occasions during his playing days, and as those playing days wore down, he seemed more and more…disappointed…in the work ethic and performance of some of the younger players coming into the league.
“You took the time to tell us what you want”, general manager Bruce Allen wrote in the release, according to the Washington Post.
It’s important to remember that Cooley hasn’t played a down of football since 2012.
“The atmosphere, being a part of a team, trying to achieve something, it’s unattainable outside of professional sports”, he said.
Cooley is confident he could make it back in the league. “I have no doubt”, he said. Reports earlier this week on ESPN noted that the club would host former Cincinnati Bengals tight end Jermaine Gresham for a tryout at the team’s facilities in Glendale, AZ in addition to their interest in Cooley. “There’s not a question in my mind”. If the team doesn’t turn it around on the field, though, none of this will matter much – Washington fans are restless, and their patience is wearing thin. While not the oldest tight end in the NFL, Cooley isn’t built like today’s prototypical tight end, and would likely be expected to play special teams.
After all Cooley’s early success, his career quickly began to disintegrate following the 2010 season. I’ve seen Jason Witten convert countless crucial 3rd down conversions in my years of watching the Cowboys in the NFC East.
