Tom Coughlin’s final message leaves Eli Manning in tears
Despite two Super Bowl wins and several winning seasons, Coughlin and the Giants have missed the playoffs in six of the last seven seasons, with their lone appearance resulting in a Super Bowl victory.
After 12 years as the team’s head coach, Coughlin resigned Monday, leaving the organization with a big void to fill.
“I will see you all next time”, was how he closed his remarks, and he also said: “I don’t know exactly what is next for me”.
“He thinks he’s the reason, (but) he’s not the reason”, Coughlin said of Manning during his going-away press conference at the New York Giants’ Meadowlands headquarters.
Coughlin’s speech was classy, thanking virtually everybody he came in contact with during his 12 years as head coach.
During his time as a head coach with the team, he lead them to two NFC championships and two Super Bowl wins, while he was also part of the coaching set -up when the team claimed Super Bowl XXV against the Buffalo Bills in 1991.
But Coughlin showed he still had the spirit to continue despite a 2015 campaign marked by a string of close losses, including eight decided by a total of 26 points with the Giants leading until the final seconds on six occasions.
“Obviously, the past three years have not been what any of us expect, and as head coach, I accept the responsibility for those seasons”, he said. On Monday, the former Giants defensive lineman honored the now-former Giants head coach. In an emotional farewell, he thanked his players and the organization and said he might not be done coaching. In their first season together, Coughlin and Reese won the Super Bowl. There was some speculation that both would be gone after a rough season in NY, but it now appears that Reese will keep his job for the time being. “I got it”, Coughlin said. When we win, you guys win.
Despite the inconsistency during his coaching time with the New York Giants, he won 2 Super Bowls as a head coach and one as an assistant. He added that Coughlin was offered a job within the organization and there was no timetable to find a new coach.
One likely candidate to replace Coughlin will be Ben McAdoo, who has been the offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. But I will remember you for helping me become a man and challenging all of us to be better husbands and fathers and men.
