Jose Bautista responds to Colin Cowherd’s comments about Dominicans
Soon to be leaving ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd appears to have done exactly that on Thursday when on his radio show he made a rather pointed generalization about Dominican Baseball players.
“It’s too complex?” he asked. Baseball is like any sport. There’s not a single NFL writer in the country who could diagram a play for Bill Belichick. “It’s in the same family”. Arguing that only four percent of the sport has college degrees and that a third of the players don’t speak “the primary language of this country, so communication can be tough, but everybody plays it and gets along fine”.
Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Jose Bautista expressed his indignation with a tweet directed at Cowherd that said, “before i rip you a new one, i would like for you to explain what u meant to say about baseball and dominicans, please”.
Now, perhaps the one snippet does not fully represent Cowherd’s thoughts and was taken out of context.
According to USA Today, the players union isn’t happy with Cowherd or his employer.
Bautista has a right to be upset, since Cowherd was essentially insinuating that people from the Dominican Republic aren’t that bright in order to make the point that baseball isn’t complex in order to defend the Marlins hiring their general manager as their manager a few months ago. Like it’s impossible? The game is too complex?
After a break, presumably after he started to catch flak for his comments, Cowherd tried to backpedal, it seems, going on about how ALL baseball players are dumb. He tries to make up for his lack of understanding of the actual sport by attempting to paint the issue as part of a much bigger topic.
While we all knew in the back of our minds that there was validity to the reports, we wouldn’t be completely sure until we heard it from the man himself.
