Chargers say agreement to join Rams in LA not imminent
The mass hiatus of the professional football teams have left many power players in the city scrambling to bring the sport back with other avenues, but none of those efforts paid off. If the ballot measure fails, there may not be time to still cut a deal with the Rams to share the Inglewood stadium.
He said the city’s proposal for a new stadium on the Mission Valley site of the existing Qualcomm Stadium remains on the table, but that the local leaders are open to discussing a stadium downtown if that is what Spanos wants.
“It’s certainly not over”, said Roger Noll, a Stanford University economist who studies the business of sports.
There’s a caveat. The Raiders only get that money for a Bay Area stadium, and only get the money if a stadium agreement is reached by this time next year.
Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is giving the Rams move to Los Angeles a thumbs up.
When NFL owners looked at the potential revenue boost from a game-changing super stadium in the U.S. entertainment capital Los Angeles, all the St. Louis Rams supporters and stadium plans meant nothing. Instead, the owners approved the Rams’ plan, but said that the Chargers would have the option of joining with the Rams.
“No decisions have been made, and no serious review of a proposed framework for a Rams-Chargers deal has yet begun”. “This sets a awful precedent not only for St. Louis but for all communities that have loyally supported their National Football League franchises”.
Whether the stadium will ultimately house two teams is yet to be determined.
By contrast, the Rams and Chargers, until now, have been rivals with competing L.A. stadium plans.
That and other factors complicate the negotiations ahead.
But the talks could get sticky from there. Many expressed anger with Kroenke. The stadium would be part of an entertainment, retail and residential complex.
Kroenke doesn’t want a partner.
The Kroenke Group and Stockbridge declined to comment. “With the passage of time, people might give them a little bit of a pass on how it played out 20 years ago”.
San Diego is not that far away from the new Inglewood stadium, noted Victor Matheson, a professor at College of the Holy Cross in MA. But the Chargers face a tougher calculation. “So their willingness to pay for the stadium cost in Inglewood is much less than the Rams”.
And they also have the word of Kroenke, who stood in front of his fellow owners and pledged he will work fairly and honorably with Spanos and them.
It’s unknown if the Rams will be selling personal seat licenses in Los Angeles.
Demoff was asked after Kroenke’s purchase of land in Inglewood, California, about the Rams’ future and said, “I expect it will be right here in St. Louis”. The NFL is offering $100 million to both the Chargers and Raiders to help build their facilities in both of their markets. “I will be working over the next several weeks to explore the options that we have now created for ourselves to determine the best path forward for the Chargers”.
The Raiders could end up in L.A. if the Chargers don’t exercise theirs, but the Silver and Black got the short end of the stick.
An NFL team is a natural monopoly.
