New York Giants Promote Ben McAdoo From OC to HC
McAdoo has learned from one of the best the last two seasons with the Giants, and he will be keeping one of Tom Coughlin’s traditions, as the clocks will be set five minutes fast in honor of the Giants’ former coach.
However, the biggest item of note that supports the McAdoo coaching hire, is it doesn’t totally alienate Coughlin.
While being the offensive coordinator for the Giants the past two season, McAdoo has earned the trust and respect from those within the organziation.
“We wanted to find someone who had the intelligence, the leadership skills and the teaching ability to be the person to lead us in the future”, Mara said. Mara said Coughlin strongly recommended McAdoo, a first-time head coach who is now also the NFL’s second-youngest head coach.
Meanwhile, the Giants moved toward promoting Coughlin’s offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo, to head coach.
“I have been preparing for this moment my entire professional life, and without the guidance and support of many people, I would not be here right now”, McAdoo said.
The Giants’ 420 points were the fifth most in franchise history, and their 5,952 net yards were the third most.
This year’s Giants’ injury-ridden roster was not talented enough to begin with, even in an embarrassingly lowly NFC East, but the 69-year-old Coughlin was the only one to pay for the team’s disappointing output in 2015. I think Coach McAdoo is a great coach, a great teacher, and will be a great leader of this team. They met again Wednesday, when he also spoke with team chairman Steve Tisch and treasurer Jonathan Tisch.
McAdoo’s appointment makes him the second youngest head coach now in the NFL. Adam Gase, the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator who was hired by the Dolphins this month, is 37.
“I hold myself to a very high standard”, McAdoo said.
The Giants officially announced McAdoo’s appointment on Thursday, preferring the 38-year-old over the five other candidates they interviewed. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of him”.
“‘I’m not going to lie it would have been like watching Bill Parcells walk out with the star on his shoulder”, Mara said of the prospect of Coughlin in Philly.
“The next day at lunch, coming back from workouts, Ben was sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for me”, McCarthy said. “He drove all night just for an opportunity to sit down and talk football”. His version of the West Coast offense – and the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. – has helped revive the offense.
Prior to joining the Giants under Coughlin, McAdoo had been the with the Green Bay Packers for eight seasons, six as the tight ends coach and two as a quarterbacks coach. McAdoo probably won’t rock the boat too much on the assistant coaches and will likely retain defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and his staff as well. However, there have been indications that he will be back. Mara realizes that he’s taking a leap of faith based on McAdoo’s time on the job one step below the job he now has.
“He’s a grinder”, Rodgers said of McAdoo, per Glauber. Because when you look at what he has done with the Giants’ offense over the last couple of years, he has been as gifted a coordinator as Belichick was for Parcells.
