It was confirmed that Celine Dion’s husband died by a posting on the singer’s website where she stated he died outside Las Vegas in their home in Henderson.
A post on her Facebook page said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that René Angélil, aged 73, died this morning at his residence in Las Vegas after a long and courageous fight against cancer”.
Just a day after her husband died, there’s more tragedy for the Dion family. Angelil was diagnosed with throat cancer and only had surgery in December 2013. Daniel, 59, is said to be in a hospital in Montreal surrounded by his family having learned on Thursday that the end is near.
Angelil began managing Dion in the 1980s and helped her reach global stardom. That’s the same disease that Celine’s husband, Rene Angelil, 73, succumbed to at the age of 73.
In 1999, her song My Heart Will Go On, from the soundtrack of the film Titanic, won two Grammy awards. In the hours after his death, Dion canceled her performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on January 16 and January 17.
The singer had previously said that resuming her residency when Angelil was still ill would be emotional, telling USA Today, “That first show, it will be fragile”.
