Ducks trade Carl Hagelin to Penguins for Adam Clendening and David Perron
Clendening, a defenseman acquired by the Penguins over the summer in the Brandon Sutter trade, never seemed to gain the trust of two different head coaches in Pittsburgh and managed to play in just nine games on a defense that has been desperately lacking the type of puck-moving presense he could have provided.
Hagelin, 27, had an assist in the Ducks’ 4-2 home victory over Dallas Friday, but had struggled offensively until recently as Ducks general manager Bob Murray was likely expecting much more from the winger after getting him in a trade with the New York Rangers.
Hagelin had four goals and eight assists in 43 games during his first season with the Ducks, who expected steady scoring from the Swede. Hagelin was acquired by Anaheim from the Rangers in exchange for Emerson Etem and a second-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft on June 27, 2015. He is in a 19-game goal drought since December 1 despite playing on a line with Sidney Crosby lately.
Perron is a three-time 20-goal scorer, but he has only 16 points in 43 games this season with the Penguins.
Meanwhile, Perron is in the final season of a four-year contract he signed with St. Louis – his original National Hockey League team – in the summer of 2012.
Dealt for a non-protected first round pick and depth forward Rob Klinkhammer during the middle of the 2014-15 season, Perron has only recorded four goals of his own this year.
Perron will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, while Clendening will be restricted. The Penguins host the Hurricanes on Sunday.
