How to Watch Tom Coughlin’s Press Conference
“I said yesterday that it was not a sad day for me, or for us, for Judy, for my family”.
The move might signal the end of a 20-year National Football League head coaching career for Coughlin, 69, one of 13 coaches to win multiple Super Bowls.
Having coached the Giants for 12 seasons he quit after a meeting with the club’s owners on Monday.
“I think it has been evident these last 12 years here how much pride I take in representing this franchise”. “I take full responsibility for every player that’s been on this roster from the time I’ve been director of player personnel until right now, so I’ll take full responsibility-even though everybody’s involved with the grading players, and the players we take”. He established a players’ leadership committee and morphed into a more accessible leader who helped his teams bond.
According to a source familiar with the coach’s thinking, he is not yet ready to retire from football despite the grueling toll that the losing had on him. He did not say if he would retire or not, but there is a lot of coaching jobs open like the Miami Dolphins job and the Cleveland Browns job.
However, Mara insisted it was time for a change despite his high regard and debt of thanks to Coughlin. He started by talking about Coughlin and his relationship with him saying, ” He’s been a great partner to work with, and he and I had a really great relationship. You did it the right way Coach.
Mara said he will also be involved in the preliminary interviews for Coughlin’s successor. “He embodies the beliefs of this organization and everything the New York Giants stand for. He’s just a good man. He’s a good role model for any person whether you played under him, and I think a lot of people have great respect for him”.
Tom Coughlin is no longer the head coach of the New York Giants, but it looks as though Jerry Reese has survived and will be the GM again next season. He was asked why Coughlin is out and Reese, general manager since 2007, gets to stay.
Coughlin was wide receivers coach when the Giants won the Super Bowl in 1990. And you might be retiring from coaching but I’m sure this isn’t a goodbye.
So what route do Mara and Tisch go to find a successor?
