Martian, Revenant get awards boost with wins at Golden Globes
The timing of Sunday’s awards is particularly good for the 20th Century Fox release “The Revenant”, which opened wide in theaters over the weekend and scored a surprising $38 million at the box office.
Viewer’s of lat night’s Golden Globes ceremony were treated to another Ricky Gervais led experience.
Brie Larson, 26, beat veteran Cate Blanchett to take home her first major award for playing a young woman who is abducted and locked up for years in the movie drama “Room”.
“Revenant” star Leonardo DiCaprio won best drama actor and Alejandro Inarritu was named best director.
“The Revenant” won three awards including best drama film, best drama actor and best director. To all the indigenous communities around the world, it is time that we recognize your history and we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people out there that would exploit them. And Matt Damon, who plays the title character – an astronaut stranded on Mars – won Best Comedy Actor. “I knew that we had something special”, she said of the show.
She previously shared: “Now I have a safe house for my vices, so when I’m making music I just have a lot more clarity”. It won the prize for Best Dramatic Film.

During his opening monologue this year, Gervais himself seemed surprised that he keeps getting invited back in spite of his behavior, at one point exclaiming after a dirty joke, “They asked me to host four times!”. Widespread critical acclaim didn’t end up amounting to very much. The Oscars’ little brother, and easily the most popular awards handed out by the press, the Globes are seen as a symbolic precursor to Oscar night, even though they don’t always line up with the awards The Academy hands out. “It wasn’t a matter of feeling bad, because she’s amusing and hilarious and will win many things”, Jennifer said, before admitting, “I just didn’t – I really expected Amy to win”.
Denzel Washington was awarded the 2016 Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay.
