DiCaprio ‘Surprised’ By The Revenant’s Success
DiCaprio – who on Sunday won a Golden Globe for his performance – is up for best actor in the Academy Awards.
U.S. actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Friday claimed to feel no nerves at the prospect of claiming his first Oscar for his role in “The Revenant“, saying he had “done the work” and could do no more.
The actor is up for the best supporting actor gong for his role as John Fitzgerald in the frontier thriller, which received 12 Oscar nods in total, but he said a phone call from DiCaprio persuaded him to accept the part.
A snub off the bat was the omission of Wiz Khalifa and his collaborators on the Paul Walker tribute “See You Again” from “Furious 7” for best song.
“Fury Road” has been nominated under 10 categories.
Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are shown in this combination of file photos (L to R) Mark Rylance, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Sylvester Stallone and Mark Ruffalo.
Leonardo DiCaprio enters the best actor race as the odds-on favorite for “The Revenant”. The Revenant is the next likeliest with odds of 13/8, followed by The Big Short (8/1), The Martian (8/1), Mad Max: Fury Road (20/1), Bridge of Spies (33/1), Room (40/1) and Brooklyn (66/1). His competition includes fellow Globe victor Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs“, Emmy favorite Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo” and last year’s Best Actor victor Eddie Redmayne, nominated this year for “The Danish Girl”.
The best actress field is led by favourite Brie Larson for “Room”, along with Jennifer Lawrence for “Joy”, Cate Blanchett for “Carol“, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn” and Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years”.
In best documentary feature, music docs Amy and What Happened, Miss Simone? each earned nods, along with The Look of Silence, Cartel Land and Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom.
To be hosted by Chris Rock, the 88th Academy Awards will be held on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre here.
