49ers Hire Chip Kelly as New Head Coach
Kelly led the Philadelphia Eagles, which ranked third in the National Football League in points per game. He also previously coached at the University of Oregon.
The post Kelly back on recruiting trail… for coaches, not blue-chip recruits like Armstead appeared first on 49ers Hot Read. Kelly wasn’t hesitant in making moves for the Philadelphia roster, trading away longtime Eagles running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for Kiko Alonso, and signing of standout Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray via free-agency.
Kelly was rumored to be on the short list of possible suitors after the team quickly fired rookie coach Jim Tomsula.
The 49ers quarterback isn’t sure how to react to the hiring because he’s still uncertain about his future in San Francisco. “He (Kelly) has demonstrated the ability to be innovative everywhere he has coached and has had great success throughout his career. I look forward to watching Trent (Baalke, the GM) and Chip work closely to build a team that will make us all proud”.
It’s been just 11 days since the Niners parted ways with former head coach Jim Tomsula after just one season-during which they finished with a 5-11 record.
The San Francisco 49ers have had a lot of turnover on the coaching staff over the past decade, but one man who has hung around is Tom Rathman. Kelly wasn’t looking for a quick return to College Football, realizing quickly that from the coaching vacancies scenario, it’s not going to be hard for him staying in the NFL. If this was a race, Kelly would have won, as the Eagles are still searching for his replacement. There has been thought that Kaepernick would be Kelly’s ideal type of quarterback. “It’s interesting that it’s come around and now Chip Kelly has the potential to coach Colin Kaepernick for the Red and Gold”.
Said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock: “I think the system will be a fit for him”. In fact, he went on Twitter to express his feelings about the new hire, telling all his followers, “Guess I might have to start running right now to get in shape”. The Bee’s Matt Barrows reports Kelly’s hiring could mean a San Francisco comeback for Kaepernick.
Baalke is expected to maintain personnel control with the 49ers.
Even Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie implied that he wasn’t happy with the way Kelly related to his players when he said the next coach of his team should have emotional intelligence and be able to open his heart to his players. The former Eel only played eight games in his rookie season on limited occasions and spent two months in the 49ers’ practice squad after committing three errors in his first six games.
Another insider says Kelly’s “power play” in Philly stemmed from the Eagles’ front-office ineptitude, not Kelly’s desire for personnel control.
