NFL Latest: Brady gets sixth playoff rushing TD
For the Chiefs, star wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the Wildcard round against the Houston Texans, will be active for todays game but his health and effectiveness will be unknown until he gets out on the field.
The Patriots entered the game with a 64 percent chance to win, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index, and they extended their win probability to 79 percent by the half. A delay-of-game penalty on third-and-9 pushed the ball back to the 14, and Alex Smith’s pass to Chris Conley fell incomplete, setting up Santos’ 32-yarder.
With the Chiefs coming of a very hot streak they have to keep their cool against the Patriots.
Now if they can hit a few more of these in the final quarter, they might be alright. The battered offensive line has limited Brady’s protection for much of the season.
The New England Patriots were supposed to be amidst a season to remember. The Patriots won that game 35-31 against the Ravens, with Brady passing just about every down. On the ground, Spencer Ware rushed for 67 yards and one touchdown in 16 attempts while Smith added 27 yards.
That includes lineman Sebastian Vollmer, who sat out against the Dolphins after being carted off the field with a leg injury in an overtime loss to the New York Jets on December 27.
The Chiefs scored a field goal on the first drive, cutting the lead to 7-3. Those close to the team expect Gronkowski to play and Kansas City is preparing for a healthy Patriots tight end.
National Football League referees might need to work on their coin tosses in the offseason. Any NFL follower will tell you it’s tough to out coach Pats Bill Belichik especially when he had an extra week to prepare but this may be a great time for the Chiefs to play the beat up Pats. He caught seven touchdowns as New England averaged 33.6 points in the nine he played before the Patriots averaged 23.1 without him. But there was confusion when Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater thought New England could choose the direction in which the team could kick.
