Oscar Nominations 2016: Who Were Snubbed By The Oscars?
The film will compete in a variety of categories, including Best Film, Best Director for Alejandro G. Iñarritu, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Supporting actor for Tom Hardy. “This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board”.
For best actress, “Carol” star Cate Blanchett and “Room” star Brie Larson, who portrayed a kidnapped mother living in captivity with her son, are seen as the favorites in a category that also includes veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years“). Moreover, several contenders with minority-led casts, such as “Straight Outta Compton”, were mostly overlooked. She called the lack of diversity in Thursday’s nominations disappointing. Jane Fonda could have had a chance because of her supporting role in Youth, and Michael B. Jordan because of starring in Creed, but neither of them were nominated. This year, it went with eight: “The Revenant”, “Mad Max”, “Spotlight”, “The Martian”, “Brooklyn”, “Room”, “The Big Short” and “Bridge of Spies”. Others were quick to point out that Straight Outta Compton, the NWA biopic helmed by a black director and predominantly black producers, was nominated only for its white screenwriters. “Irony of ironies, the only actor who received a nomination for “Creed” is white”.
“There was more diversity in the 1936 Berlin Olympics”, tweeted one user, named Richard Hine, alongside a picture of African-American athletes at the games.
DiCaprio has missed out on an Oscar four times in the past.
“I am so grateful to the Academy for their recognition of this film”.
The president of the Academy Awards’ voting body isn’t pleased with this year’s lack of diversity in its Oscar nominations. The postapocalyptic tale was second with 10 nominations, including picks for picture, director George Miller and editing. Similarly, no women cracked the Best Director race – but, sadly, that comes as no surprise.ABC will air the Oscars live on February 28, with Chris Rock hosting.
The best picture nominees, besides those two, are “Bridge of Spies”, “Spotlight”, “The Big Short“, “The Martian”, “Brooklyn” and “Room”.
