Celine Dion cancels concerts following death of husband Rene Angelil
After taking a break from performing to care for her husband, Dion returned to performing on the Strip in 2015 at Angelil’s urging.
Angelil had been sick with throat cancer for more than two years, and Dion said in an August USA Today interview that she was prepared for his death.
His death was also announced by his wife, Celine Dion, who posted on her website saying, “It’s with profound sadness that we are announcing that René Angélil, 73, died this morning at his Las Vegas home after a courageous battle with cancer”.
Angelil was born in Montreal in 1942 to Lebanese and Syrian parents and after singing himself he managed a number of groups in Canada including Québec entertainers René Simard and Ginette Reno. She was 12-years-old at the time, but both Angelil and Kaye recognized her vast talent.
News of Angelil’s death triggered an outpouring of sympathy from Dion’s fans, with the singer’s name trending on Twitter worldwide.
She has been a regular performer at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas since 2003.
He is survived by their children Rene-Charles, 14, and 5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy, and his adult children from a previous relationship-Anne-Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre.
Dion won Grammy awards for songs including the “Titanic” theme “My Heart Will Go On”.
U.S. Senator Harry Reid on Nevada said the couple took a “risk on Las Vegas” in 2002 by committing to an extended show contract, a move he said was unprecedented for a star of her caliber at the time. “He wants me to fly. So I feed my husband, then I feed my kids”.
