Wisconsin stores among dozens of Walmart closures

He said the company will also be more heavily focused on its e-commerce business, as online marketplaces like Amazon continue to flourish.
Walmart is shuttering many stores around the world and the one located in Baltimore City is shuttering too.

Worker advocates said they fear this could be the beginning of a slew of cuts. Express stores average about 12,000 square feet compared to Walmart Supercenters at 182,000 square feet and the roughly 38,000-square-foot Neighborhood Markets, which are created to rival traditional grocery stores. “While we learned a lot from the pilots … we decided not to proceed with that offering”. The concept never caught on as the stores served the same quick-trip objective as Walmart’s larger Neighborhood Markets. The officials said that they did not feel confident that the planned stores would generate healthy sales volume. But they have failed to make significant inroads or generate enough returns in the face of cutthroat competition from dollar stores and other discounters.
“We’re assessing options and looking at everything”, he said.
Representatives from Walmart say approximately 16,000 employees will be affected.
“We’re particularly pleased with the results in fresh, where we brought in new products, developed strong price leadership through strategic buys and promoted locally sourced and organic products“.
Wal-Mart is merging an Arkansas-based division that develops computer systems for its stores with a fast-growing technology unit in Silicon Valley, aiming to hasten its move to compete in the online era. While Walmart announced plans for that store before the Walmart Express, it didn’t open until 2013.
The stores closing in East Texas are Walmart Express stores, a smaller version of the Neighborhood Markets. “We will also open 200 to 240 stores internationally”. The “mini” versions of Walmart stores started going up in 2011. Wal-Mart, which operated 558 stores in Brazil before the closures, has struggled as the economy there has soured.
