Met office issues severe weather warning for ice and snow
Traffic Scotland has issued warnings of icy conditions throughout much of the country, but snow lovers have been promised a great day on the slopes.
Outbreaks of rain and sleet, with snow over high ground, will spread from the west, turning increasingly to snow on lower ground through the evening and through the night. This brings a risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces.
Early next week the forecast is expected to be changeable with showers or longer spells of rain, sleet and snow.
The Met Office has issued 12 “be aware” yellow alerts of snow across Scotland, Northwest England, the Midlands and southern England, as well as London.
Britain is bracing itself for blasts of snow, ice and frost as temperatures plummet to below freezing in parts of Scotland and England.
“Snow accumulations of 5-10 cm are likely across Wales above 200 metres, with 1-4 cm possible at low levels well inland from the coast”.
The Met Office’s chief operational meteorologist, Dan Suri, said: “Clear skies will allow temperatures to fall widely below freezing on Friday evening”. But still, it’s possible to tease out the detail of places most likely to see snow.
The Met Office also added with warnings for travelers to be aware of hard in driving conditions.
Saturday will remain cold with frost persisting all day in sheltered areas and top temperatures only 3 to 6 degrees, Met Eireann has said.
Emergency services are warning drivers to fully deice their windscreens before setting off on journeys as ice remains on many side roads.
