Johnny Manziel not wanted in Cleveland
Even with an unconventional power structure and a reputedly unstable organization, Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam nailed down Jackson as his head coach on Wednesday, per Andrew Gribble of the Browns’ official website.
Owner Jimmy Haslam walked new Browns coach Hue Jackson to the entrance to team headquarters, opened the door and insisted Jackson go inside first. Obviously Jimmy and Dee Haslam for this opportunity, going through the process of meeting [team executives] Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta. The new regime made a decision to hire their own coach rather than retain Jackson; the Raiders have gone a very Browns-like 18-46 since then. He is smart. He’s tough.
Cleveland’s first win in 2016.
“The ownership has been bad the coaching has been terrible there really hasn’t been anything to cheer about”, said Browns season ticket holder Al Franceschelli.
“I came here to win”, said Jackson, who says he’s comfortable with the team’s personnel department and new emphasis on analytics.
Couple that with McCarron’s knowledge of Jackson’s playbook and nuances of his version of the West Coast offense, and the Browns could have themselves a caretaker at the QB position until the presumed rookie is ready to start or either McCown or he himself falters. Jackson said he is not familiar with the 2016 quarterback class yet but expects that to change quickly.
The 50-year-old isn’t anxious about the track record of his predecessors.
At the top of his introductory press conference, Jackson thanked those he was associated with in Cincinnati-and thereafter applauded the way Cleveland has assembled its front office. “I’m not anxious about who picks this player, picks that player”.
“This is our man”, Haslam told them.
For now, anyway, publicly, anyway, new Browns coach Hue Jackson is choosing to be non-committal regarding troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel.
Given that, it’s possible that the Browns’ having the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming National Football League draft might have been a key factor in Jackson’s decision to take the job.
Jackson didn’t shy away from Manziel as a topic and didn’t rule him out-at least in public. The next season he was arrested and suspended for assault, and controversially was allowed to return, ultimately helping Nebraska win its second straight title.
Jackson replaces Mike Pettine, who was sacked after going 10-22 in his two seasons. Had Jackson stayed, he’d become the next coach of the Bengals at some point in time.
His future in Cleveland is seemingly set, though. The 49ers lost that game and the next two as well.
Last month, after re-gaining the starting job but apparently suffering a concussion in Week 16, Manziel was placed into concussion protocol and took off for Las Vegas before Cleveland’s last game, not reporting to the facility on Sunday morning as required under team rules.
That doesn’t mean it won’t become an issue if yet another Browns season turns disastrous. “We’re going to be passionate about what we do and we understand there’s a lot of work involved in order to meet our goals”.
When he was with the Cincinnati Bengals, Hue Jackson wore many different hats.
It’s been a whirlwind few days for Jackson. Jackson’s move will be a five hour drive up I-71. Jackson was the one who got him to loosen up and enjoy playing football.
It’s been a mess.
