Texas lawyer files federal lawsuit against Ted Cruz over his Canadian birth
And in a nod to Trump’s home in midtown Manhattan, Cruz said: “I can frame it another way: Not a lot of conservatives come out of Manhattan”.
Did Donald Trump knock it out of the park with his “angry” response, or could one of the GOP contenders still make a surprise run?
Trump, for his part, backed off from his criticisms of Cruz that he had broadcast loudly all day on Saturday.
Trump suggested that Cruz could put any lingering concerns to rest by taking the question of White House eligibility to court himself. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Cruz and Bush had the most positive sentiments online, according to Brandwatch.
Now, it seems, Trump may get his wish: On Thursday, Newton B. Schwartz Sr., a Texas trial lawyer, filed a complaint against Cruz in the U.S. District Court in Houston asking a judge to resolve the issue.
Speaking to reporters, Cruz said “Donald’s record does not match what he says as a candidate”.
The Constitution lays out three requirements for becoming president: A person must be at least 35 years old, must have lived in the USA for 14 years and must be a “natural born citizen”.
Ah, but there was Brooklyn-born moderator Maria Bartiromo at Thursday’s debate in SC, telling Cruz she didn’t know what he meant.
Trump and Texas senator Ted Cruz, his closest rival in the hard-fought primary, took the gloves after months of cordiality and back-slapping. But former South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon, a Cruz surrogate, elaborated on the attack after the debate Thursday. But the Supreme Court hasn’t previously considered the eligibility question. The debate was one of two final opportunities for the candidates to lay out their visions for the country ahead of the February 1 Iowa caucuses. “Regrettably a majority of American citizens, including constitutional scholars, may disagree with”.
“That New York comment kind of hurt Cruz a bit”, said Bob Rice, a retired motorcycle dealer from nearby Grimes. Asked how he knows, McCarthy said: “Because his mother’s an American”. “The facts and the law here are really quite clear”, Cruz said. “We have to get out”, Trump said at the start.
Christie then opened the floor to the audience, who asked him questions ranging from his position on gun control to how he will unify the nation if he is elected president. They’re both considering many candidates, maybe even a Democrat. During a 45-minute speech, Trump left Cruz unscathed until the very end, when he mentioned the loans that Cruz received as a Senate candidate in 2012 but did not properly report to election authorities. And he poked Mr. Trump over his mother being born in Scotland. “Not that I believe they need it or they want it. But if he had any class, he would apologize”.
“But I was born here”, Trump shot back. As the two attempted to establish some time of lane in the party, Rubio had accused Christie of being an Obama supporter with issues such as Planned Parenthood, gun control, and Common Core.
However, Republican presidential candidates have repeatedly criticised the rapprochement as weakness fostered during Mr Obama’s time in office.
