#OscarsSoWhite Trends On Twitter Following ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ ‘Beasts
Actor Henry Winkler retweeted an article pointing out that black actors and directors were shut out of the Oscars race, while Piers Morgan wrote that “Hollywood remains hideously racist”.
Ice Cube’s comments on The Wendy Williams Show comes on the heels of #OscarsSoWhite, which was started by those criticizing the Academy Awards choices for Best Actress and Best Actors and other important categories that saw no African American talent getting nominated.
Ice Cube has shrugged off news that NWA biopic “Straight Outta Compton” hasn’t been nominated for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars. While the films producer, and N.W.A. member, Ice Cube says he thought the film would receive more recognition, hes not surprised that it did not.
“I’m not pissed. You know, I’m not surprised”, he told Williams. “It’s the Oscars – they do what they do”, he levelled.
The F. Gary Gray-directed Straight Outta Compton, which charts the rise and fall of the California hip-hop group and features an all-black cast, did land a nomination in the Original Screenplay category. I don’t think it’s racism, I don’t think it’s madness, I just think, what are the votes?
In the film, Ice Cube is portrayed by his real-life son O’Shea Jackson Jr.
The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were revealed this morning and as always, several seemingly strong contenders failed to make the cut. This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board. “There you go, that’s all the “diversity” you get from us”.
Of the lack of minorities in prominent categories, she said, “We have got to speed it up”.
Many movie-goers expressed their anger and disappointment on Twitter using the #OscarSoWhite hashtag that floated around during the Oscars 2015 telecast for the same reason the hashtag is trending now.
