Martinez slams ‘diabolical’ refereeing in Chelsea draw
Chelsea striker Diego Costa was taken to hospital after injuring his shin in his side’s eventful 3-3 draw with Everton yesterday, interim manager Guus Hiddink revealed.
The captain saved the ailing Premier League champions, having scored an own goal at the start of a second half that produced all six goals.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez said he was feeling “pure anger” after his side were denied victory by a controversial 98th-minute Chelsea equaliser.
The Toffees doubled their lead in fine style six minutes later, as Mirallas drilled a low shot past Courtois from another low Baines cross, but Chelsea responded through Costas’ fifth goal in five competitive games since Hiddink’s appointment as manager.
Just minutes earlier Ramiro Funes Mori had put Everton on course for their first league win at Stamford Bridge since 1994 only to be denied in heart-breaking fashion.
Hiddink’s side had scored twice in the space of two minutes and Everton were relieved not to concede a penalty when Costa went down under Jagielka’s challenge as the hosts poured forward again. It is not good enough, taking two points away in the manner it was done.
When asked whether he knew he was offside, Terry told Sky Sports: “I’m not sure to be honest – I’m out of breath”.
The fourth official’s board said seven minutes were being added on.
Costa immediately went to hospital for a scan on a shin injury.
He also had complaints against the referee as he felt the game was allowed to run a minute longer than it should have, which ultimately proved crucial at the end.
Terry’s goal should not have stood given that he was in an offside position and it is clear that the referee and his officiating team made a mistake.
The Everton coach was furious that the game had gone beyond the allotted seven minutes of stoppage-time, with the figure settled on following an injury to Bryan Oviedo.
“I look to my team and think today it will be three or four nil because it was very easy in the middle as we had a lot of space”.
Up until the 63rd minute, that is, when Chelsea launched a devastating two goals in two minutes comeback that had owner Roman Abramovich on his feet leading the applause that greeted it.
Before the Everton game, Hiddink said: “We were one point off the relegation line, but now we have a little bit more room to breathe. I prefer next week to play not very well against Swansea and to win the game”.
