Oscars 2016: Ice Cube speaks out after Straight Outta Compton nomination snub
Ice Cube is still Straight Outta Compton and still keeping it straight up, as shown by his response to the film’s awards snubs during a Thursday appearance on The Wendy Williams Show.
“Straight Outta Compton speaks to triumph”.
With all of that considered, produce, and actor Ice Cube responded to the trend and the snub his movie received. Despite its popularity, none of the actors were nominated and the film failed to make the best picture category, instead earning a nod for best original screenplay. The people loved the movie. “The people support the movie”. Number one at the box office over $200 million worldwide. I don’t think it’s racism, I don’t think it’s madness, I just think, what are the votes?
Cube’s son O’Shea Jackson Jr. stars in the movie as he portrays Cube in the film during his rise to fame in the rap group N.W.A. During his rounds of promotion, Jackson Jr. said he wanted to see more stories of triumph. He explained: “It is nice to be recognised, but N.W.A. was anti-establishment, so we’re used to people trying to dismiss what we gotta say”. “We’re used to the industry, really, you know, looking down on us”.
After the panel, Perry talked to a scrum of reporters and addressed one question about the controversy of no person of color being nominated for an acting Oscar this year.
Comedian Ricky Gervais was just one of the celebrities who took to Twitter to complain about the lack of black nominees, writing: “Why did the Oscars announce all the white nominees first?”
“This organization is committed to increasing the diversity of voices, opinions and experiences”, African-American academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs claimed previous year.
