Ice Cube: I’m not p****d over Oscars snub
STRAIGHT OUTTA Compton was one of the biggest films of 2015 – making more than $200 million worldwide. Meeting with Wendy Williams yesterday, he said of the snub “I’m not surprised”.
Thus, it should come as no surprise that when a young Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.) teamed up with MC Ren (Aldis Hodge) to write songs, they’d reflect the reality of what they’d witnessed growing up in the ‘hood. I don’t think it’s racism, I don’t think it’s madness, I just think, what are the votes? To be fair, the Oscars are actually an improvement over last weeks Golden Globes, where Straight Outta Compton didnt receive a single nomination.
Directors Scott (“The Martian”) and Spielberg (“Bridge of Spies”) saw their respective films nominated to the best picture race while neither received a mention in the directing category. In fact, he subsequently threatened to “put a bullet to his temple” in a tune where he also suggested his former bandmates “get rid of that devil” because they couldn’t be gangstas “with a white Jew tellin’ you what to do”. “I can’t be mad”. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly statedsaid of his hopes for the future. When it’s doubtful, when nobody is on your side, when your back is against the wall, you triumph and make it through. I want more movies like Straight Outta Compton. This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board.
It looks like #OscarsSoWhite might start trending again this year.
Some have blamed the Oscars for the lack of diversity, but some are saying the blame should be passed to the executives who are making casting decisions in Hollywood.
