“The Revenant” crew fete Oscar nominations at London premiere
There’s high hopes for The Revenant after it scooped 12 nominations at the Oscars – more than any other film.
DiCaprio has previously called it “the most hard film” he has ever done due to the freezing temperatures and having only one and a half hours a day of natural light to get their shots, but the cast said they were lucky to have his dulcet tones to keep morale up.
Todd Haynes’ Carol and F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton were not nominated for this category. “I was not expecting it… especially at this time in my life”. “It’s fantastic to see people react so positively”, he added about the film.
“The Revenant’s” Best Picture competition includes “The Martian”, “Bridge Of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “The Big Short”, “Room”, “Spotlight” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”. It is also a deep honor and very humbling to receive this prestigious award nomination for doing the profession I love. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed seven nominations, including best picture and best actor for Matt Damon, but, surprisingly, no best director nod for Scott.
The strong showing Thursday for “The Revenant”, including a best actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio and best supporting actor for Tom Hardy, follows its win at the Golden Globes.
Gil Robertson, president of the African American Film Critics Association, told Reuters of the nominations: “For Sylvester Stallone to be the only nominee for “Creed” is totally a slap in the face to some of the other people involved in that project”.
After seemingly slipping in an unpredictable awards season, “Spotlight” rebounded Thursday, landing six nominations including best director for McCarthy, best screenplay for McCarthy and Josh Singer, best supporting actress for Rachel McAdams and best supporting actor for Mark Ruffalo. His chances could have been hurt by some category confusion since it was unclear to some whether Keaton was competing for the Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor award. J.J. Abrams was also noticeably snubbed from the Best Director Category.
Tom Hardy is astounded to have scored an Oscar nomination for The Revenant.
Best known for comedies like Talladega Nights and Stepbrothers, Adam McKay didn’t seem like the obvious director to adapt The Big Short, Michael Lewis’ 2009 book about the investors who saw the big housing market crash coming. An Oscar nomination can be a career-changing moment for any actor, filmmaker or crew member, and whether it’s your first nomination (Brie Larson) or your 50th (John Williams… seriously, he has 50 Oscar nominations), it’s always a special moment. “Star Wars” may have set a domestic box office record with $822 million and counting, but “Room”, with a minuscule $5.2 million to its name, was the bigger Oscar force.
