Marijuana Helps Heal Broken Bones
A marijuana plant is grown in window sill of a Yupik family on July 3, 2015 in Newtok, Alaska. They have also noted that the healed bones have become stronger, more flexible and are less susceptible to injuries. In actuality it is not “marijuana” that you benefit from but the non-psychotropic chemical compound called cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) that proves to be advantageous for multiple things.
There’s yet another use for marijuana: It may help to heal broken bones, according to a new study.
Dr. Yankel Gabet of the Bone Research Laboratory at the Department of Anatomy at Tel Aviv University explains that the medical potential of using a number of compounds found in cannabis is “simply undeniable at this point”. They observed crosslinking of collagen in the healing process of bones when treated with THC and CBD and found that CBD promoted the expression of an enzyme named enzyme lysyl hydroxylase 1, or PLOD 1. “CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity”.
At the end of the day Gabet concludes, “Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing”. Then, the researchers have added tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to the mix in another group of rodents to see which of the two will yield better results.
Previous studies done by the same team, discovered that cannabinoid receptors within the human body stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss, possibly paving the way for the future use of cannabinoid drugs to combat osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases. The researchers have tested the compound on rats. It is also used as treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. It may also slow the spread of HIV and stopping metastasis in aggressive cancer.
Marijuana is still largely illegal across the world and in the United States. Nevertheless, the Federal Government has maintained its stand that Marijuana is an illegal drug.
