Chandler Jones apologizes for ‘stupid mistake’
Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones apologized yesterday for the first time since this weekend’s medical situation at the Foxboro Police Department.
On Thursday, the Town of Foxborough released a partly redacted police report about the freakish episode with Jones.
He reportedly showed up to the station without a shirt and appeared to be either surrendering to police or praying, according to the Boston Globe.
Jones was taken to Norwood Hospital, and was released the same day.
He was not available during the 45 minutes that the Patriots locker room was open to reporters before practice on Wednesday. He missed the December 6 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but returned December 13 against the Houston Texans before he was removed from the team’s injury report the next week.
The Patriots play the Chiefs in the playoffs on Saturday.
Asked if he felt the need to apologize to his teammates, Jones said, “I feel the need to apologize to everyone”. “We issued a statement on that, and I really don’t have anything to add to it”, Belichick said.
League officials are said to be looking into the incident to determine what, if any, disciplinary action should be taken and whether Jones should be placed into the league’s substance abuse program. “That’s the way with it is in the organization and me personally and I don’t think that will ever change”, Belichick said. Right now, my main focus is on becoming the best player I can be and helping the team.
Coach Bill Belichick also declined to comment earlier Thursday on whether Jones would be benched for his behavior.
According to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, the Patriots were happy with the way Jones responded to the situation on Thursday leading to his start on Saturday. “That might be easier for all of us”, he said. He then sidestepped nine more questions about Jones. I know it sounds [repetitive], and it sounds like I’m repeating myself. “This is when we made the collective decision to have Mr. Jones evaluated by the Foxboro Fire Department’s paramedics”.
