Leonardo DiCaprio admits to being surprised by the reaction to his performances
Actor John Krasinski and President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Cheryl Boone Isaacs announce Eddie Redmayne as a nominee for Best Actor in a Leading Role in the film “The Danish Girl” during the 88th Oscars Nominations Announcement at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on January 14, 2016 in Los Angeles.
DiCaprio stars as a fur trapper in the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed movie, which he says marks a move away from the typical Hollywood film.
This isn’t the first time Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated for an Oscar.
The actor, who has also been nominated for his acting roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond, said it is unlikely he would ever make a physically grueling film like The Revenant again.
The best actress field is led by favourite Brie Larson for Room, along with Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years). He will be battling it out against DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Matt Damon (“The Martian”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”). Two of his films, The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road, are up for a combined staggering total of 22 Academy Awards.
Besides Inarritu and Miller, others competing for the Best Director trophy include Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight”, Adam McKay for “The Big Short” and Lenny Abrahamson for “Room”.
Alicia Vikander is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl.
Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”) is the clear, and clearly sentimental, nominee for best supporting actor, at 2-1.
After being snubbed by the BAFTA nominations, Straight Outta Compton received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and J. J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens scooped five nominations.
Eight films were nominated for best picture.
To be hosted by Chris Rock, the 88th Academy Awards will be held on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre here.
