Sanders accuses Clinton of ‘vicious and coordinated attacks’
Up until now, Clinton has done well in debates; it’s a format that suits her. But Sanders’ message is breaking through, and he’s gaining in the polls nationally, leads in New Hampshire and is neck and neck with Clinton in Iowa. “It’s a race where Hillary Clinton has significant advantages in the long run”.
Many of Mr. Sanders’ proposals – Medicare for all, free college and breaking up the big banks – go beyond congressional Democrats’ agenda but are now embraced by an ascendant activist wing of the party. He is spending $767,539 on TV and radio ads in both Spanish and English to compared to Clinton’s recent $162,490.
Heading into Sunday’s Democratic presidential debate, Sen. It’ll air on NBC and will be live-streamed on the network’s digital platforms as well as on the NBC News YouTube channel.
“Thanks, Team Clinton”, says Michael Briggs, spokesman for the Sanders campaign. Considering he’s still the leading Republican, his name is likely to be bandied around tonight.
Those policy prescriptions win support in primaries, but many Democratic elites fear how they will play in a general election.
New national polling shows that Sanders is continuing to narrow the gap with Clinton, creating a sense of déjà vu about 2008, when Clinton was eventually defeated by underdog Barack Obama.
Sanders faces a similar quandary.
But in a campaign that has seen billionaire Donald Trump rise to the top of the Republican presidential field by capitalizing on an electorate angry with the political establishment, Clinton may once again be embracing the mantle of experience at a time when outsider status is in vogue. This time she is losing to a 74 year-old white socialist.
If Sanders were to get into a nasty back-and-forth with Clinton, he might look like the sort of Washington politician he and his supporters condemn. The setting may give Clinton a chance to confront Sanders on his past votes related to gun control.
“When it really mattered, Senator Sanders voted with the gun lobby and I voted against the gun lobby”, Clinton said last week, referring to Sanders’ vote in favor of a 2005 law that protected gun manufacturers from legal liability.
Sanders linked his support for the 2005 bill to his home state of Vermont, arguing he did not want to hurt small stores in his state.
“Chill out”, John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign manager, tweeted at Brock. And his advisers have said that Clinton has taken multiple positions on gun control during her career.
The week signaled a dramatic shift in tone between Clinton and Sanders. A tweaked version of that loophole allowed the Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof to purchase the gun he used in the June shooting. But he added, “We are eliminating private health insurance premiums (with the single-payer program) so you’re not going to have pay any”. “But the issue here is what my view has always been, and what is most important, is that we have a strong instant background check”.
“The significant early resources mobilized by our Finance Committee in 2015 helped us make smart early investments in key areas – and will enable us to continue with strategic allocations in Q1 of 2016”, the campaign said.
