Kovalev puts three boxing titles on line against Mohammedi
Unfortunately, his speed and power have been made to look good against pastry chefs and dock workers masquerading as club fighters.
Kovalev, who didn’t turn pro until six years ago at the age of 26, is coming off wins over Hopkins and Pascal that cemented his status as the best fighter in his division. I know I am still among the best in the world and best in my division. And he’s going to get better. Check. Big-name opponent on his résumé? That fight has been talked about quite a bit over the last year-plus, but despite there being differences in promoters, networks, and whatnot, Sergey still believes it’s Stevenson himself who is avoiding the fight.
The fight is mandatory defense for Kovalev, who owns three 175-pound titles.
Ring Magazine recognizes Stevenson as its light heavyweight champion, though Kovalev-who’s listed as the No. 1 contender at 175-is No. 7 on the pound-for-pound list, while Stevenson is unranked.
Where can I watch Kovalev vs. Mohammedi online?
“Any boxing fight to me is like a street fight because you don’t know what can happen”, said Kovalev.
Sergey Kovalev will be taking on Nadjib Mohammedi tomorrow night on HBO, while he continues to pursue other big fights.
“I stay focused, and I’m ready for this fight 100% because it’s the biggest fight right now for me, I mean in Las Vegas”. It’s like I want to fight right. “In France it is very hard for me to develop my style and my career”. My titles are my babies.
“I would like to still be champion as long time as possible”, Kovalev said at Thursday’s final news conference.
Kovalev won the WBO title in 2013 and defended it with three KOs before pitching a violent 12-round shutout that added Hopkins’ IBF and WBA belts to the trophy case last November.
A split-decision loss to Jermain Taylor ultimately cost him the hardware collection, but preceded a reinvention that saw him rise to 175 pounds and win four titles before the one-sided beating by Kovalev.
Sergey’s popularity has greatly increased since major wins over Bernard Hopkins and Jean Pascal. The longer it takes to make a fight with Kovalev, the greater the chances become that something will happen to scuttle the fight. If it starts getting boring to you and you don’t tell yourself that, you’ve got a problem. But as a result, Kovalev has shown the ability to take a punch against fighters with average-to-above-average punching power.
Mohammedi has a tendency to get sloppy at times, in previous fights he had a tendency to throw wide looping punches that could potentially get him into big trouble considering the power that Kovalev brings to the table.
Given that level of dominance, it’s no surprise the most intriguing options come from elsewhere.
There is nothing written in the stars or the form book that foretells anything other than a resounding Kovalev victory here.
Golovkin. For as long as it lasted, it’d be like Tyson vs. Tyson.
.
Sadly, though, fans won’t get Kovalev-Stevenson now or, more than likely, ever.
In fact, Hopkins sees Ward-who returned from a 19-month ring absence in June-as the ideal complement for a near-term mega-event. “He’s a gold-medal victor”, Hopkins said.
“Go back to the ’80s, and all of those guys, Ray [Leonard], Tommy [Hearns], they were all welterweights and they moved up to middleweight to fight Marvin [Hagler]”, she said.
Nadjib is an aggressive fighter with good hand speed and great endurance; he is always in tremendous shape and treats every fight like there is a title on the line. That’s a super fight, definitely.
