David Haye gets KO 131 seconds into return
Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye of Britain returned to the ring after a three and a half year year absence to score a devastating 1st round knockout of Mark de Mori of Australia at the 02 Arena in London.
I know it’s hard to imagine a fighter as old as De Mori being inexperienced, but if you looked at his resume, it’s filled with 2nd and 3rd tier opposition.
“Tyson Fury is pretty clear about not wanting to fight me”, he added. I believe it is too late for Haye to ever get a fight against Fury, so that is a waste of time completely for him to pine away for the fight because it clearly will not be happening. “I’m not rushing my punches, I’m more patient, more experienced”, Haye said. A bigger fight’s Anthony Joshua.
The Hayemaker would elect to retire from the sport just over three years ago, but would announce his re-emergence in the sport shortly after Tyson Fury defeated Vladimir Klitshcko for the World Heavyweight Title.
Haye has made no secret of his desire to fight domestic rival Anthony Joshua, who has captured the imagination of the public by stopping all 15 of his opponents in a stellar start to his professional career. ‘I want to win back my belt and my whole goal is to be the heavyweight champion of the world again, ‘ he told metro.co.uk in an interview previous year. I think it makes more sense with a world title on the line so let’s wait. At one time, Haye was arguably one of the most popular and most talked about fighters in boxing.
An opponent of De Mori’s level did little to demonstrate what Haye is still capable of. “It will take someone like me to clean it up”. His only other defeat also came by first-round KO against 88kg Sydney cruiserweight John Wyborn in 2004. Fury however says it is due to his behaviour when they were scheduled to fight previously. In Brooklyn, New York, the 201cm WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder had some anxious moments before knocking out Polish southpaw Artur Szpilka with one massive right hand in round nine.
In December, the IBF, a sanctioning body that is based in New Jersey and has a history of utter scandal, chose to strip Fury of their belt and match the undefeated, untested and unknown duo of Charles Martin and Vyacheslav Glazkov for their vacant title.
Haye’s victory began a day of extreme violence in the heavyweight division.
