10 snubs from the 2016 Oscar nominations
Courtney Eaton possibly has the best reaction to Mad Max Fury Road’s Oscar nominations.
“Those three films were left out in the nominations for Best Animated Feature, replaced by surprises “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There”. The other five were: Tom McCarthy’s investigative journalistic procedural Spotlight, Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, Adam McKay’s Michael Lewis adaptation The Big Short, the mother-son captive drama Room and the ’50s Irish immigrant tale Brooklyn.

In the lead actress category, the picks came in as expected with nods for Cate Blanchett (“Carol”), Brie Larson (“Room”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”), Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn”).
“Amy”, the film about the late British singer Amy Winehouse, and “What Happened, Miss Simone?”, the story of singer Nina Simone, are competing in the Best Documentary category.
Leading man Leonardo DiCaprio will vie for Best Actor, Alejandro G Inarritu is up for Best Director and Tom Hardy has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is made up of some 6,000 members who work in the film industry and who select the nominees for the Oscars.
Kate Winslet, who is fresh off her Golden Globe win for her performance in “Steve Jobs”, is pitted against Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight”), and Rooney Mara (“Carol”) for Actress in a Supporting Role. Despite a supporting nod for Stallone, there is no nomination for Ryan Coogler or Michael B Jordan as director or actor for their amiable Rocky 2.0 boxing picture, Creed, or Idris Elba for his great performance in Beasts of No Nation, or Samuel L Jackson in The Hateful Eight.
