Crisis Averted: George Miller Will Return for More ‘Mad Max’
Though its “Mad Max” predecessors had sold lots of tickets on reasonable budgets, none had been nominated for Oscars-and often-tired sequels seldom won awards anyway. Nonetheless, it begs the question: what might he be making next, if not the new Mad Max, and when, oh when, can I see it?
According to the director: “I said no, [another Mad Max movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. I won’t do those any more”.
Mad Max: Fury Road was also partly shot at Fox Studios in Sydney and some other locations in the harbour city.
While talking with EW about his nomination, Miller stated, “All I said was it won’t be the film I do next”.
A case in point is Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance Carol, a critical favourite that grabbed six Oscar noms – including Best Actress for Cate Blanchett and Best Supporting Actress for Rooney Mara – but failed to make the cut for Best Picture and Best Director. These two fan favourites are also nominated for Oscars – DiCaprio for Best Actor and Hardy for Best Supporting Actor.
Add box-office behemoth Star Wars: The Force Awakens to the 2016 Oscar mix, with its five nods in technical categories, and the Academy is looking at a massive TV viewing audience that should reverse the declines of recent years.
The Australian nominees include production designers Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson; sound mixer Ben Osmo; sound editor David White; makeup and hairstyling Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin; and visual effects Andrew Jackson and Dan Oliver.
“Even the cats are up running around, so we might have a cup of tea and then get back to bed”, laughed Miller around 2am on Friday, when asked about his plans for the rest of the night.
The ceremony, hosted by Chris Rock for the second time, will be held on February 28 and air live on NBC.
