‘The Revenant’ leads 2016 Oscar nominations : ‘Carol’ and ‘Star Wars’ miss out
People have been flitting in and out of this best supporting actress category for quite some time.
“The Martian”, which trailed the top two films with seven nominations, picked up a best-actor nomination for Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded alone on Mars.
George Miller’s post-apocalyptic thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road” was named film of the year on Sunday, while Miller won the director of the year award.
“Hollywood sure loves sequels: for the second year in a row, zero actors of color get Oscar nominations”, blared a headline on the website of ThinkProgress, a progressive advocacy organization. The producers, screen actors and writers guilds nominated Compton as among the year’s best.
Director Alejandro G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant” scored a leading 12 Oscar nominations on Thursday morning when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 88th annual Academy Awards nominations at the AMPAS Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.
There were no black actors nominated in any of the top categories, and the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite – used in the past to criticize the lack of diversity among the nominees – quickly trended on Twitter. Exhibit B: “Room” – about a boy and his mother living as hostages of an abuser – with nominations for best actress, (Brie Larson), best director (Lenny Abrahamson) and best picture.
Perhaps the least surprising nomination was in the animated feature film category, where Pixar’s “Inside Out” is the favorite.
On the other hand, though “The Martian” did well – earning nominations for best picture and best actor – Ridley Scott was left off the directors’ list.
“It takes you back in time to a space where we had no idea what were the challenges of these people – the trappers”, she said. Their respective directors also were among five nominated for prizes from the Directors Guild of America, whose winners often align with the Oscars.
The nominees for best supporting actress are Mara (“Carol”), Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight”) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”).
“Of course I am disappointed”, Isaacs told Deadline in response to the Oscar nominations, adding that 2015 was a great year in film, nonetheless.
Actors vying for the golden statuette for supporting roles include Christian Bale (“The Big Short”), Tom Hardy (“The Revenant”), Mark Ruffalo (“Spotlight”), Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”) and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”).
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” didn’t get a nomination in a major category, but composer John Williams did for best score.
The race is now on for the coveted Oscars, to be handed out on February 28 at a star-studded ceremony hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
