Couple claims to be Tennessee Powerball winner appear on TV
The lump sum payout is about $327 million.
They’ll pay off their mortgage and their daughter’s student loans, but don’t plan any big purchases.
On Friday morning, a couple posed for a photo in front of an NBC News van, sparking a conversation about what they’d do with their imaginary millions. A Publix grocery store in Melbourne Beach, Florida, will get $100,000 and an unidentified store in the small Tennessee town of Munford will get $25,000. Those winners have not been announced yet. As lottery players searched online to find out who had bought the three winning tickets in Florida, Tennessee and California, they found a slew of hoaxes, including social media accounts from people saying they had won and promising followers a piece of the prize. “John! You gotta check these numbers!'” Lisa said. “I knew that I wanted to get a lawyer and try to follow the procedures that they tell you to follow”, John said.
At home, he laid out the four tickets, one representing each family member, and took a nap. “We also have to remind the public we’re a state agency”. They did not stop to talk to reporters and were led to a back room to have their ticket looked at.
The American dream ticket: Who’ll strike it rich in the half-billion lottery?
The Robinsons arrived at the Tennessee Lottery offices about 1:30 after flying from NY.
He admitted: “I checked them four times and said: ‘I’ll believe it when the news comes on in the morning and they say hey, there’s a victor been in Munford'”.
As for buying a bigger, more resplendent house, it appears to come down to practicality for John Robinson.
On Wednesday, John was driving home from work when Lisa told him to go pick up a ticket.
“The Chino Hills victor has not come forward yet”, California Lottery said on its Twitter feed.
The ticket is worth $528,000,000 since there were two other winning tickets sold.
Munford is a city of just 6,000 people and only three places sell Powerball tickets, but now it’s known across the country.
“I think it’s awesome because were Munford proud”, Rebecca Dockery said. The couple is in their middle 50s. He said he loves all the attention the Powerball has brought, but he said what Tennessee can do with the money is even more important. Their neighborhood is a quiet, close-knit suburb of well-kept single family homes. In a symbolic gesture, Lupe rummaged through an old bag of tickets in the garage so that her grandson could bet the same “lucky numbers”. The Robinsons’ son, Adam, is an electrician.
Ilene Townsend, the lawyer’s daughter, was able to contact the Today Show’s producers. A Rechnitz spokesperson tells BuzzFeed that the nurse is a “wonderful lady and an incredible employee” who stayed to finish her shift even when she thought she had won $1.6 billion.
If she splurges on anything, it will be her family, Lisa said.
The New York Daily News reports the nurse’s daughter says it was an embarrassing prank. The Associated Press could not immediately verify their claim.
A news release from Tennessee lottery officials says the state also has a ticket that won $2 million.
Their lawyer went with the family, as did their rescue dog, Abby, who snoozed through most of the excitement.
