Marrone becomes 3rd ex-head coach to interview with Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins have hired Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase as the franchise’s new head coach. “In the end, I was convinced and the search committee was unanimous Adam was the right leader for our football team who best met all our priorities”.
Gase was among the NFL’s top head-coaching candidates, also interviewing with the Browns, Eagles and Giants before agreeing to join the Dolphins. The 37-year-old coach has served as offensive coordinator of the Broncos and the Bears, obviously, but has no head coaching experience.
The Dolphins conducted an exhaustive search in the week since their season ended 6-10 with Dan Campbell leading the way on an interim basis. Tannehill also regressed this season after signing a $96 million contract a year ago. He has interviewed for four of the NFL’s seven head coach openings this year. They became the first team to hire a head coach this offseason when they completed a deal Saturday with Gase, most recently the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. It will be important for Gase to produce the same improvements in Tannehill that he’s done with other quarterbacks.
Adam Gase was part of the Denver Broncos’ coaching family for six seasons. Many people expected Gase to be “one and done” in Chicago, but after Cutler played so well under him it was hard for people to see him go. Still, Gase has an excellent track record of squeezing the most out of his quarterback’s abilities, and the former Texas A & M standout is mobile, can make all the throws and is accurate on the run.
From 2009-14, Gase was on the Broncos’ staff, spending two years as wide receivers coach, two years as quarterbacks coach and 2013 and 2014 as the offensive coordinator.
Gase received credit for getting the most out of Bears quarterback Jay Cuter, who posted a career-high passer rating (92.3) this season. Eli Manning has stated a preference for McAdoo to stay with the Giants in some capacity, either returning as coordinator or being elevated to head coach.
It will be Gase’s first head coaching job at any level. Cutler has spoken very highly of Loggains and handing him the play calling duties would be the easiest way to maintain the continuity built up in 2015.
