The overarching theme of this year’s celebration is “Remember!”
Saturday, dozens commemorated Martin Luther King Jr.as they marched all over Panama City in his honor. If you do something good for someone else if you have compassion if it’s just for one person, if we did that, if everybody took that charge, tomorrow would be awesome, it would just be something off the charts.
“As we celebrate what would have been the 87th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we reflect on his enduring legacy and the enormous impact his life has had on making America great”.
In addition to participating in Monday’s march, the Boys &Girls Club of Maury County will hold events all week to celebrate King.
“If we can keep Dr. King alive in Terrebonne Parish, we’re doing something special”, Diana Collins said. At last year’s celebration, DSU president Dr. Richard B. Williams dedicated a new light post in honor of King, and the monument dedicated this year will build on that display. Sometimes love is that strong voice that calls for justice and for people to stand together for change.
Jackie Rogers of Jacksonville, who has been coordinating the King Day ceremonies since the early 1980s, said the community has made some progress in race relations in the past 35 years, but improvements still are needed. “When you talk about Martin Luther’s King dream you have to talk about the Kansas City Monarchs, their contribution was unique and it was monumental”.
In listening to students read their essays, McLary said she was amazed, and it shows they are deep thinkers. Has this country realized the dream of Dr. King?
Multicultural Action Committee will be hosting a community event titled “All Cultures One Voice” at Silver Creek High School from 2 to 4 p.m.
Emet Maayan says we still have a long way to go as a city and the legacy Dr. King leaves behind is an important reminder of that.
Since it is a holiday and many people are out of school or work, the United States Forest Service will be waiving day-use fees at recreation sites at Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests.
