Sanders Proposes Tax Hike To Pay For Universal Health Care
Clinton, Sanders and former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, who lags badly in polls, will participate in the 9 p.m. EST debate, the fourth between the Democratic contenders.
Bernie Sanders dominated Sunday night’s Democratic debate here, overpowering Hillary Clinton in a format she typically controls. Democratic presidential candidate, Sen.
Clinton tried to undercut Sanders’ support among Democrats who voted for Obama. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, right and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley listen, during the NBC, YouTube Democratic presid…
An NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday morning showed Clinton up nationally by an even wider margin – 59% to 34%.
Sanders’s plan, he said Sunday, would cost $1.38 trillion per year, expenses that would be covered through “progressive” higher tax rates, particularly on the wealthy. “We started this campaign off at three percent in the polls and now we’re closing in in Iowa”.
On health care, Clinton blasted Sanders new “Medicare-for-All” plan, released hours before last night’s debate, as an unrealistic substitute.
“We’ve accomplished so much already”, Clinton said, painting Sanders as a threat to universal health insurance. She was helped that the first questions were about gun control, race relations and drug addiction, which she has talked about for months on the campaign trail.
“I’m the only candidate standing here tonight who has said I will not raise taxes on the middle class”, she said. Nevada Young Democrats President Hawah Ahmad said Sunday’s debate was a reflection of that.
In doing so, she again cast herself as the natural successor to Obama and accused Sanders, until recently an independent, of being an unfaithful ally of the administration. So here’s a promise that I make-and I mentioned a moment ago how corrupt the system is-Goldman Sachs, paying a $5 billion fine, gives this country, in recent history, a Republican secretary of treasury, a Democratic secretary of treasury.
“I can not walk down the street, Secretary Clinton knows that, without being told how much I have to attack Secretary Clinton“, Sanders said. Sanders responded, saying the idea didn’t translate to him working against Obama. “We’re going to go forward”. She went on to list a series of provision that suggested Sanders stood in line with the National Rifle Association.
“We finally have a path to universal healthcare”, Clinton said. The debate took plan just blocks from the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church where nine parishioners were killed during Bible study last summer.
During the past few days, Clinton’s campaign held numerous campaign events aimed at energizing black voters.
Sanders shot back with criticisms of Clinton’s ties to financiers, including her acceptance of speaking fees from Wall Street firms. “Sanders has flip-flopped on legal immunity for gun makers and sellers”, Clinton said on CBS. But where we disagree is the comments that Senator Sanders has made that don’t just affect me, i can take that, but he’s criticized President Obama for taking donations from wall street. and President Obama has led our country out of the Great Recession.
Dodd-Frank also requires large banks to hold more capital as a cushion against loans that might go sour and subjects banks to “stress tests” to ensure they can survive economic downturns.
Some advisers to Clinton – including her husband, former President Bill Clinton – believe her campaign erred by not attacking Sanders early and marginalizing him before his populist message grew into a political movement. Kitchen table adviser, perhaps? “We’ve had some very tough dealings with one another”.
“I know a little bit about this”, she said when talking about Obama’s Syria policy, “having spent many hours in the situation room, advising President Obama. I’m going to ask for his advice”. Then Sanders finished his thought on health care, telling Clinton “in all due respect, you’re missing the main point”.
Some of the crowd booed Sanders, who twice brought up Clinton’s receipt of lucrative speaking fees since leaving her post as secretary of state in early 2013.
All things considered, however, this was Sanders’ best debate.
Where he floundered: He is to the right of Mr. O’Malley and Ms. Clinton on gun control, and his rivals pounced.
