King Center to celebrate 30th anniversary of MLK holiday
The theme for this celebration is “Journey for Justice and Equity”. Check out this excerpt from Howard Sachar’s “A History of Jews in America”, this partial archive of JTA’s coverage of the Civil Rights Movement, and this introduction to Martin Luther King’s relationship to American Jews and Israel for a start.
We are proud that such is the case in York today, where a number of Martin Luther King Day events are taking place to put the human rights hero’s vision into practice.
Davidson, 40, born seven years after King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968, said he considered the Nobel Peace Prize victor a role model especially needed now.
“Let us not take for granted his work”, said the Rev. Marcus Davidson at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale.
We can’t help but wonder what King would think about the strides African-Americans have made in society in the decades since his death.
At 8 a.m., the Martin Luther King Coalition will begin the holiday with a sold-out King Legacy Awards Breakfast.
As churches across San Antonio and the nation packed their pews on Sunday, some people like Mary Emerson said the words of King – powerful then and now – will forever capture the dream.
As you enjoy the holiday, keep in mind to pass on Dr. King’s message, even the simplest acts can make a big impact on someone else’s life. Employees and students mark the day with celebrations, seminars, volunteer work and religious services. Many businesses and schools observe by closing for the day. The Rev. King also touched on fund-raisers he would have over the next year to promote his civil disobedience program which was to rely on a disciplined group of trained people to ensure violence was restrained and nonviolence achieved. “But regardless of race, we should be able to come together”.
“What do we need in our community today?”
King’s legacy also will be celebrated at New York’s state Capitol complex.
