OR rancher says he didn’t let armed group remove fence
An Oregon judge wants the ranchers who are occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Center to repay the government the money the armed occupation has cost, or between ,000 and ,000 per day for the first week after their arrival, the Guardian reported.
But officials in Burns said the meeting can’t be held at the Harney County fairgrounds or any other county facility.
The Hammonds’ case set off the occupation on January 2, but the two ranchers have distanced themselves from the armed group. A small, armed group has been occupying the remote national wildlife refuge in OR for a week to protest federal land use policies. She said that actions by certain politicians have only emboldened the occupiers.
Local authorities have made no attempt to reclaim the refuge.
The group posted a wish list online, asking supporters from around the country to send them essentials like razors, warm blankets and cigarettes. The group says the goal was to give rancher Tim Puckett access to land that had been blocked for years. He said he resigned because he feels intimidated and betrayed by local officials. She said that civil discourse is needed to work out a solution.
“There are continual reports of law enforcement officers and community members being followed home; of people sitting in cars outside their homes, observing their movements and those of their families; and of people following them and their families as they move around the community”, Ward said Monday.
But some residents also said they share the activists’ frustration with the federal government – though they don’t agree with their tactics. “Lol Economics!” What’s really LOL is that they think that trolls are going to be dismayed enough by the militia making $15 on a resold dildo to either stop sending them dildos or find something equally annoying to send.
“These are my public lands, these are your public lands, and what I see is a lunatic fringe of radical extremists who have taken my land over”, said Garrett VeneKlasen, a protester with the New Mexico Wildlife Federation.
The group had planned to hold a meeting Friday evening in Burns to explain themselves and inform residents when they will leave.
The Association of Oregon Counties Executive Director Mike McArthur, who is involved with providing Mr Gratsy with strategic advice and “encouragement”, told The Independent: “I trust judge Gratsy as the administrator, the judge and the CEO of the county and he knows the costs involved”. “Let’s not candy-coat this thing – they are terrorists”.
