President Obama Delivers State of the Union Address
While Obama’s speech was a retort to Trump about America’s values, Haley was making a retort on the Republican Party’s values.
The Iran deal should not only avoid the risk of a nuclear standoff in the Middle East; if it heralds a normalization of ties with the Shia state, it could also see a more natural balance of power emerge in the region and allow America to wean itself off a one-sided dependence on oil-rich Sunni regimes.
He also offered his pitch to fix it – including structural reforms to a political system he said even those in Washington don’t like. “That doesn’t mean that you go around insulting people and thinking that that is clever, or that is being honest, or telling it straight”, he said.
‘There’s just a lot of useful information, ‘ she said of her memoir that details her time at the helm of the State Department. Because of you. I believe in you. I’ll let you you know that right now’.
HORSLEY: Governor Haley is considered a rising star in the GOP, and she’s been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate.
He defended his record – and implicitly urged the public to elect another Democratic president to build on it – but acknowledged the persistent anxieties of Americans who feel shut out of a changing economy or at risk from an evolving terror threat. Without naming the Republican frontrunner directly, Obama lamented the fact that the 2016 presidential campaign has resorted (more so than usual) to mudslinging and fearmongering.
He finished on a high note, emphasizing stories of Americans who set an example of the spirit of the nation. He declared the United States “the most powerful nation on Earth”. A steady erosion under way for years has accelerated during Mr Obama’s time in the White House and now shows itself in congressional dysfunction and campaign vitriol.
