Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
The annual walk honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.in Amarillo will start at 11 a.m. Monday January 18th at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Maria Alaniz holds a photo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama during last year’s Martin Luther King Jr. At the core of his beliefs was an unwavering dedication to helping everyone, because all people are created equal and worthy of a helping hand when needed. Several streets will be temporarily closed throughout the day because of the events.
Doors open at 7:00 a.m. and the program begins at 8:00 a.m. The man was a leading voice in ending legal segregation of African-Americans throughout the Unites States, and in the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Tributes and recognition of King and the achievements of the civil rights movement have been celebrated at NAU since 1986 before the creation of a state holiday in Arizona.
At the University of Richmond, the legacy of Dr. King will also be honored – both off and on campus. Community Breakfast was held Monday morning at the Muskie Center in the Waterville, attended by Gov. Paul LePage.
Only 30 to 37 percent of workers have had a paid holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr.
Goshen College will host an MLK Day convocation at 10 a.m. It is taking place at the Church-Chapel and will include music and guest speaker Drew G.I. Hart, a professor, blogger, author and activist.
While MLK Day will have been a federal holiday for 30 years this year, most cities use it as a day of service, where you can volunteer for government agencies or other groups.
Parents looking for a way to get their children involved on this day of service can head out to the Fenner Nature Center.
