Two Walmart Express stores in Chicago to be shuttered
Wal-Mart opened smaller-format stores in the U.S.in 2011, called Wal-Mart Express, that were convenience stores. The lion’s share of the USA terminations will affect Walmart Express stores, its smaller store division. Those stores are about 12,000 square feet and sell essentials such as toothpaste. The retail behemoth said it plans to strengthen its Supercenters and expand online business and store pickup services.
While a substantial number for anyone else, the closures only mark a fraction of the company’s 11,000 stores worldwide.
Closing Wal-Mart stores The closures will begin at the ending of this month and do not entirely come as a surprise.
In October, Wal-Mart US CEO Greg Foran said sales growth was strong at Neighborhood Markets, but the company would pull back store openings to improve profitability.

Wal-Mart operates 4,500 in the U.S. Its global workforce is 2.2 million, 1.4 million in the U.S. alone.
Walmart to close 269 stores: Walmart (WMT) will close 269 stores around the world in a strategic move to focus more on its supercenters and e-commerce business, the company said Friday. The store, which opened in 2002, sits amid empty parking lots and a closed former Sam’s Club on 50 acres now planned for a new headquarters for Baltimore-based Under Armour.
Walmart is shuttering many stores around the world and the one located in Baltimore City is shuttering too.
Of the affected stores, 154 of them are in the United States, with two in southern MI, a store in Hartland and a Sam’s Club in Waterford. A total of 6,000 Walmart associates will be impacted by the closings in Brazil and the rest of Latin America.
According to Walmart, store closings will include 102 of its express stores.
Employees who have not been placed in new jobs by February 10 will receive 60 days pay. The Bentonville, Arkansas, company said it is working to ensure that employees are relocated to nearby stores.
The Walmart Neighborhood Market in West Hartford is the only CT location that will be closing, the company announced.
