Mexican officials said that they are investigating the meeting held by then-fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman with actor Sean Penn and actress Kate del Castillo in October 2015 to discover if any crimes were committed.

The texts, published by Mexican newspaper Grupo Milenio, showed Guzman, 58, calling the actress “beautiful” and referring to himself as “Papa”.

Penn has acknowledged he tagged along for the October 2 meeting at a mountain hide-out set up by Del Castillo to discuss plans for a movie about Guzman’s life.
Penn came in for scathing criticism over the interview both in Mexico and the U.S., with Republican Marco Rubio calling it “grotesque”.
