PM Narendra Modi declares Sikkim as first organic state in the country
Modi will be welcomed by Governor Srinivas Patil and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling who will be accompanied by Cabinet ministers and heads of all state government departments, a state official said. “I am eagerly awaiting my two-day visit to the Northeast”. Making a strong pitch in favour of organic farming, Modi said the winds of this organic effort (in Sikkim) would now spread across the country.
“This will not only boost the organic farming in the state and the surrounding region, but would also help in the growth of economy and generation of new avenues of vocation for the youth”, said Singh, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). The Prime Minister lauded the efforts taken by sikkim to convert successfully its agriculture into organic farming.
During the Prime Minister’s visit, around fifty-five farmers from all over the State will display their organic produce. “When the idea of organic farming would have been shared over a decade ago I am sure people may have opposed this”.
The Prime Minister will attend the State Agricultural Ministers Conference on sustainable development, organic farming and eco-tourism, in Gangtok.

Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister said that it is a fine example of cooperative federalism where the ministers and officers, responsible for agriculture in the country are going to deliberate together for 2-days.
The Prime Minister said farmers have to be motivated for schemes such as soil health card.
While asking states to ensure organic farming becomes successful, Modi said there is a great demand worldover for organic products and such farming will be beneficial for the farmers as well as the country. Even school labs could be used during summer holiday months for this objective, he added.
