Shell And PayPal Team Up For Speedy Petrol Payments
Chevron in the US has also announced mobile payments through Apple Pay but they are in testing period at the moment. With so many gas stations these days retaining little compunction for forcing the user to pay for gas he or she doesn’t actually get until it’s pumped into the car-not to mention forcing a return trip to the cash register should the user overestimate the amount of gas needed-there would be a clear demand for a means to fill up without having to go any further away from the vehicle than need be.
To use the service, customers simply need to link their PayPal account to the app, set up a PIN and head to a Shell station. Then, all that’s required is to scan a large QR code at the pump being used, select how much you want to spend on fuel and then fill the tank. The app will activate the pump and you’re ready to refill.
It’s a mobile payment service which allows customers to pay for their fuel from the Shell Motorist app (available on Android and iOS) and a linked PayPal account. Once you reach your maximum limit, the pump will automatically stop serving your fuel and the Shell app should confirm the purchase. When I went to test the app at my local Shell garage, there were plenty of signs and pamphlets explaining how to use Fill Up & Go, but staff explained that it had not yet been enabled at that location. In addition, it also will free up the queues inside the fuel station, saving you the time you would normal spend queuing.
There is a new way to pay at the pump in the United Kingdom – using a smartphone.
