Lattin’s tip lifts No. 2 Oklahoma past No. 11 W. Virginia
As WVU beat the previous No. 1 team, Kansas, by double digits, a win over the Sooners would have rightfully granted the Mountaineers an argument for the top spot.
Oklahoma is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since the final two weeks of the 1989-90 season.
This has quickly become one of those seasons in which the No. 1 ranking is a hot potato.
Seton Hall 81, No. 12 Providence 72: Khadeem Carrington made 12 of 12 free throws and finished with 22 points for visiting lead Seton Hall (13-4, 3-2 Big East).
Teammate Venky Jois scored 21 points on 10-for-12 shooting.
In the coaches poll, the Sooners received 26 of the 31 first place votes, but are still easily ahead of #2 North Carolina, who received four first place votes, and #3 Kansas, which got one first place vote. 0-2, Carter 0-3). N.C. State is 10-8 and 0-5.
No. 6 VILLANOVA 55, GEORGETOWN 50: In Washington, Josh Hart had 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats (16-2, 6-0) seized their 21st consecutive Big East victory. Ryan Spangler added 10 points and 14 rebounds and Lattin, who had no points and two rebounds in the first half, finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
WVU’s first second-chance basket of the game came with 13:47 remaining and the Mountaineers built their largest margin at 48-41. Oklahoma improved to 15-1.
Freshman Henry Ellenson led Marquette (12-6, 2-4) with 20 points.
Pitt had been ranked No. 20 heading into last week.
Michigan State (16-3) is No. 11, followed by Arizona (15-3), Baylor (14-3), Virginia (13-4), Miami (13-3), Providence (15-3), Louisville (14-3), Butler (13-4), Iowa State (13-4), Duke (14-4), USC (15-3), Purdue (15-3), Kentucky (13-4), SC (16-1) and IN (15-3). Portland 84, BYU 81: Alec Wintering scored 22 points, including two free throws with 16 seconds left, and host Portland (9-11, 3-4 West Coast) beat BYU (13-6, 4-2), two nights after the Cougars won at No. 25 Gonzaga for the second straight season. Oklahoma was able to get to the free throw line more and shot better than WVU. Jordan Woodard and Isaiah Cousins each had two. Southern Cal is now 15-3 on the season.
The nation’s second-leading scorer, averaging almost 27 points per game, Hield was held to 5 of 11 shooting and 17 points.
Daxter Miles turned the ball over for the Mountaineers, Lattin rebounded a missed Hield 3 and he pitched it to Woodard for a 3 that went in and put the Sooners up 55-51 at the 9:14 mark. Trevon Bluiett scored 18 points for Xavier.
No. 15 Texas A&M 79, Georgia 45: Jalen Jones, Alex Caruso and Danuel House all scored 12 points for Texas A&M (15-2, 5-0 SEC).
Blocked shots: 5 (Hield 2, Lattin 2, James). The Mountaineers, fresh off a dominant victory over #1 Kansas, were trying to score wins over #1 and #2 in CBB in the same week.
No. 18 Michigan State 80, Iowa 73: Aerial Powers scored 21 of her 23 points after halftime, powering Michigan State’s (13-4, 4-2 Big Ten) comeback.
Iowa State and Baylor have work to do before they can ascend towards the top of the Big 12.
