People help Flint with water crisis on King Day
Last July, organizers got their wish as SC swiftly removed the flag which had flown at the capitol for more than 50 years after what police said was a racially motivated shooting that claimed nine lives at a church in Charleston.
The All People’s Celebration honored Dr. King and his legacy by inviting investigative journalist John Carlos Frey to discuss his work exposing injustice in his coverage of the border.
Merdean Gales, who organized the downtown event and knew Dr. King, stressed the day is about action just as much as it is about reflecting.
“Opening our doors today is important; Martin Luther King Jr. day is a day that families normally wouldn’t have access to food pantries, and that’s not good because most adults are home and children are out of school”, Koch said.
“To make valentine’s day cards for sick people to make them more happy”, said Sydney Willard, a seven year old Girl Scout Brownie.
The St. Paul, Minnesota, Police Department has put an officer on leave while it investigates allegations that he made a post on Facebook urging drivers to run over protesters who rallied against the police killings of two black men in the Twin Cities past year.
“It’s something that we can never forget”, King-Betts said.
The executive director of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Ericka King-Betts, said she is honored that her sons carried the banner and helped lead the march. Golden was fatally shot by St. Paul police early past year. “We had to choose”, Clinton said. This year, however, was noticeably different; for the first time, there was no Confederate battle flag looming over the day’s events.
But the main reason this particular bridge was chosen, was because to get in and out of Staunton, you have to drive over this bridge, now known as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.
“I would like to see his special day, his Martin Luther King Day, be a separate day to himself and to the recognition of his role in the civil rights movement in our country”, Hutchinson told reporters during a news conference on January 6. Martin O’Malley, who is running a distant third behind Clinton and O’Malley in the polls, also joined the march.
