Slain Mother of Six Laid to Rest in Jerusalem
A terrorist stabbed Dafna Meir to death in front of her teenage daughter inside their home in the West Bank settlement of Otniel, near Hebron, on Sunday evening. Dafna Meir was a senior nurse at the Sorocca Hospital.
Dafna Meir, 38, was laid to rest Monday morning at the Har Hamenuhot cemetery in Jerusalem. On Monday, the Israeli military ordered all Palestinian workers employed in the Gush Etzion bloc to leave. Froman’s attacker was shot and injured by an armed civilian after fleeing the scene. Just two days before her death Meir had written on her community blog about the dangers facing Israelis. “The situation is not easy and sometimes it feels like Russian Roulette”.
Despite this headline fail, the IBT was one of the only mainstream media outlets to even cover the terrorist attack. The United States considers the communities “illegitimate” and an impediment to a peace deal with the Palestinians, who want the same land for a future state.
The latest incidents have added to the growing sense of crisis over the continuing violence that has seen nearly daily attacks and which has claimed the lives of about 180 people on both sides, including 100 Palestinians Israel says were killed during attacks and attempted attacks.
Paramedics said they found the woman unconscious and without a pulse.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement Monday sending his condolences to the family, including Meir’s husband, Natan, and vowed swift punishment.
“Whoever tries to harm us, we will bring him to justice”, the Israeli leader said.
Meir’s death is the second deadly incident in a matter of months, with Rabbi Yaakov Litman and his 18-year-old son, Netanel shot and killed in November as they drove to the pre-wedding celebrations of Litman’s daughter.
“You left us with an enormous vacuum”, Renana said in her eulogy.
“I’m sorry that in your hardest moment I was unable to help you”, she continued. She was a nurse at Soroka University Medical Center in Be’ersheva.
Even by the appalling standards set by Palestinian terrorists, Sunday night’s brutal stabbing of an Israeli mother in her own home was particularly heinous.
Hebron, where several hundred Israeli settlers live in the city centre among around 200,000 Palestinians, has been a flashpoint in a wave of Palestinian knife, gun and car-ramming attacks that began in October.
Following the attack, the Israeli Defense Forces as well as police launched a manhunt for the attacker, setting up checkpoints and declaring the settlement wa closed military zone.
