Geneseo police: Man ‘distraught’ over breakup stabbed ex-girlfriend, man and himself
The SUNY victims have been identified as Kelsey Annese, a 21-year-old student from Webster, New York, Matthew Hutchinson, a 24-year-old student from Vancouver, British Columbia, and Colin Kingston, a 24-year-old former student from Geneseo.
Annese was a senior Education/Spanish major at SUNY Geneseo who was a member of the women’s basketball team. Kingston and Annese previously dated for three years.
A former SUNY Geneseo student, apparently distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend, used a “large knife” to kill her and a male Geneseo student before taking his own life over the weekend, Geneseo authorities said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Jeffrey Sezniac of the Genesio Police Department told CKNW that Kingston’s father called 9-1-1 and told police that his son had indicated that he’d hurt his ex-girlfriend Kelsey Annese and was considering harming himself before he ended the call.
“All the indications from talking to those witnesses is that no one had heard anything that made them believe there was anything happening in the house”, said Szczesniak. Three bodies were discovered Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, near the State University of NY at Geneseo after Geneseo police responded to the home around 6 a.m. Sunday following a 911 call.
Police said Annese lived at the Wadsworth home.
None of those involved had a police record.
He said Hutchinson was a big part of the local hockey community and among the upper echelon of firefighters at the department, which he joined in 2012.
“I think we’ll remember Matt, and I know everyone will try to be a little like Matt in their life”, said Chanler. Hutchinson, from Vancouver, British Columbia, was also a senior and student athlete: he played on the ice hockey team and was studying geography and business.

“It’s a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo as we begin to mourn these heartbreaking deaths”, SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles said in a statement.
The university said Monday both the men’s and women’s basketball games that were originally scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed.
Barry Douglas works for the Chilliwack Chiefs and says Hutchinson embraced the club’s community outreach work during his time with the club.
Geneseo said the deaths were “an isolated incident” and that there is no threat to other students.
For three years, he had volunteered at the Geneseo Fire Department, despite having a heavy schedule of classes and team games. “We are making every effort to ensure that needed support is available and have established a web page that has information about available counseling services”.
