Acts Of Service Mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day In Michigan

Around the country, people are celebrating the legacy of a civil rights icon Monday and DE is no exception.

Community activists say there are all types of things that can be done in this community to further Martin Luther King Junior’s dream.

Throughout the nation and here in Savannah, we are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King’s passionate plea for equality led to the passage of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965, allowing all Americans to vote regardless of race.

“We changed everything that we do or have done for years on Martin Luther King Day, and chose to actually do a service event” stated Green. Day by serving the community.

Folks gathered at the Frank Johnson Recreation Center Monday morning, and three other spots, where they marched to downtown Macon’s City Hall.

The theme of freedom is especially meaningful this year, she said, because it is the 50th anniversary of her father’s trip to Chicago to highlight the need for open and fair housing.

She tells me she made her way here all the way from Augusta.

Another name to watch is Alexander Shelton.

At the end of the march, the people filled Pittman-Sullivan Park and the streets surrounding it as they listened to a program about King’s life and ongoing civil rights efforts.

The MLK Drum Major Awards recognize individuals and corporate businesses in the Twin Ports who have gone above and beyond to contribute to diversification, end racial injustice or promote social reforms. “He’ll give every young person an opportunity if they would just apply themselves and engage civically in making this place a better place to live”.

“This day is devoted to improving education and I hope for the sake of the children of SC, progress is possible”, said Clinton.

“It’s really, really important to be a part of something big”.

These new leaders are also getting recognized by the community.
