Three Dead After Disgruntled Ex-Boyfriend Reportedly Murders Student Athlete
Kingston, who recently broke up with Annese, reportedly brought a “large knife” to an off-campus home to confront her and Hutchinson.
A spokesman for the Geneseo Police Department told a Sunday news conference that of the three bodies found, one may be a perpetrator. According to a recording of the local police scanner from Sunday, someone identified as Kingston’s father called the police and “reported that his son, Colin Kingston, just called from an unknown number and states that he murdered his girlfriend…and that he’s also going to kill himself”.
Police believe Hutchinson and Anessee were killed sometime between 5:30 a.m. and the 6:21 a.m. phone call, because an officer who had been issuing parking tickets on the street before the slayings didn’t find Kingston’s vehicle there before he left at 5:30. Hutchinson, from Vancouver, British Columbia, was also a senior and student athlete: he played on the ice hockey team and was studying geography and business.
Update (12:22): New York State Police investigators believe Matthew Hutchinson was killed by Colin Kingston in a double murder- suicide.
Police said he had no criminal history, and there is no indication he previously threatened Annese, nor that he was under the influence at the time. That’s where he found his ex-girlfriend, Kelsey Annese, 21, and another man, Matthew Hutchinson, 24, in a bedroom. Kingston’s father then called authorities.
At least five other people were in the home at that time, but only four of them were residents.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the Geneseo Police Department, the New York State Police, the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office and SUNY University Police Department have all been part of the investigation.
“We’re maximizing the ability of our counseling services to our students and everyone on campus”, said SUNY Geneseo president Denise Battles.
There was no sign of forced entry to the building, police said.
Hutchinson took up hockey at age 9 and played defense for the Geneseo Knights, according to his athlete bio.
“We think our students will be comforted by keeping as much stability in their lives as possible, even during this hard period of mourning”, she said. Hutchinson was also a volunteer firefighter.
Despite writing on his LinkedIn page that he graduated in 2013, SUNY Geneseo officials told that the former student had not in fact graduated from school.
“There’s multiple law enforcement agencies still involved gathering information to completely put everything together, what happened, but at this point I don’t (see) what could be charged in this incident”, said McCaffrey. Classes for the spring semester start Tuesday and will go on as scheduled, the college said.
